Between 2001 and 2005, Steve wrote extensively for the leading monthly and quarterly aviation press; sometimes using a pseudonym in order to mask certain magazines' extensive monthly reliance on his output.

Despite shifting focus in 2005 to books and partworks, he continues to receive magazine commissions in 2009.

Subjects he has written about vary dramatically. They include in-depth analysis of weapons systems, emerging technologies, current tactics and capabilities, weapons systems and conflicts.
